Cutting & Shining process

Finding a gem is all about luck, but refining the edges and shining a precious stone involves consistent craftsmanship of a master gem cutter. Special sets of tools are constantly in use for process of making necessary measurements deciding how to cut the stone.

All gems are carefully cut and polished to give a maximum refraction and a depth by progressive abrasion using finer and finer grits of harder substances. Diamond, the hardest naturally occurring substance, is widely used as an abrasive to cut and polish most of the gemstones, including diamond itself. In addition, Silicon carbide is preferable for cutting softer gemstones. Polishing the fine cut stones are done with tin oxide, chromium oxide or aluminum oxide to give a glittering final finishing. The value of a stone is based on rarity, color, clarity and cut.
